Electric Emperor Instructions

Welcome

Hi. Welcome to the “Electric Emperor”, the CD-ROM version of Jack Herer’s “The Emperor Wears No Clothes”.

Quick note for those who hate instructions: Just go straight into the presentation with your web browser and anytime you get an alert box it is because you haven’t set things up properly — just click “OK” and keep on moving.…

If you want, you can skip over all this and go directly to the “Emperor Wears No Clothes” by clicking here. But if this is your first time using this CD-ROM, you might want to read a few instructions to get things set up for a more pleasant experience.

Setting up your web browser:

The suggested method for viewing much of this CD-ROM is a web browser.

We have carefully crafted this presentation so that it will at least show the text from Jack Herer’s “The Emperor Wears No Clothes” on any browser. Text-only browsers will display all the text from the book. Old graphic browsers will show the pictures and text. But if you have one of the most recent browsers (IE 4 or later or NN 4 or later) loaded with QuickTime (preferrably 3.0 or later) and ShockWave (preferably 6 or later), then you will get the full presentation. You can view the QuickTime movies separately from a browser with any movie player that recognizes CinePak QuickTime movies. If you don’t have the latest versions of plug-ins, you may get annoying alert boxes telling you about errors (and be unable to experience the corresponding multimedia element), but just click “OK” and move on and you will still get the majority of the presentation.

The recommended browsers for viewing this CD-ROM are Netscape Navigator 4 or later [ON-LINE LINK], Microsoft Internet Explorer 4 or later [ON-LINE LINK], and Opera [ON-LINE LINK]. Any web browser should work. Earlier versions of Netscape Navigator or Microsoft Internet Explorer will work for most of this disk (but you will miss out on some parts and possibly get an occassional alert box telling you about problems loading something).

There are versions of Netscape Navigator for Macintosh, Windows 95, 98, NT, AIX, Digital UNIX, HP-UX, IRIX, Solaris, SunOS, and LINUX [ON-LINE LINK]. Netscape Navigator 4 or later is recommended. Earlier versions of Netscape Navigator will work for most of this disk (but you will miss out on some parts and possibly get an occassional alert box telling you about problems loading something).

There are versions of Microsoft Internet Explorer for Macintosh, Windows 95, 98, NT, Solaris, and HP-UX [ON-LINE LINK]. Internet Explorer 4 or later is recommended. Earlier versions of Internet Explorer will work for most of this disk (but you will miss out on some parts and possibly get an occassional alert box telling you about problems loading something).

There are versions of Opera for Macintosh, Windows 3, 95, 98, NT, OS/2, Amiga, and BeOS [ON-LINE LINK].

This HTML (world wide web) presentation of the “Electric Emperor” looks best if you open up your browser preferences and set the fontsize to 18.

Portions of this presentation are ShockWave 6 movies. ShockWave only runs on Macintosh and Windows 3, 95, 98, and NT. The Windows 3 version of ShockWave is not recent enough to run the multimedia elements on this CD-ROM. The Flash-only version of ShockWave for Solaris and LINUX will not show all of the materials on this CD-ROM. You need to have MacroMedia ShockWave 6 or later [ON-LINE LINK] installed on your web browser. To get a copy of the MacroMedia ShockWave plug-in, click here [ON-LINE LINK] (NOTE: MacroMedia’s site attempts to figure out which version of the plug in matches your computer). When you get to the MacroMedia site, the default will be to give you a Flash-only version of ShockWave. You need to look at the bottom of step 1 and pick “Need a different Web player?” and then choose a version for your platform with both Director and Flash ShockWave. If you don’t feel like downloading the ShockWave plug-in you can still enjoy the presentation. If you don’t have ShockWave or you have an outdated copy, you may get an occassional alert box about MIME types, X/INFO types, or other error messages. Just click “OK” and move on.

You will also need Apple QuickTime. There are both stand-alone QuickTime players and QuickTime plug-ins for Macintosh and Windows 3, 95, 98, and NT [ON-LINE LINK]. To get a copy of Apple QuickTime 3 or later and the QuickTime plug-in, click here [ON-LINE LINK]. If you are using a version of QuickTime earlier than QuickTime 3.0, your browser may choke when attempting display some of the really huge videos on this CD-ROM. To avoid choking your browser, cancel the loading of the QuickTime movies and instead view them from any Movie Player (including the one that came with QuickTime). There are QuickTime players available for most other platforms. If you are using another platform, you can still enjoy the movies by going directly to the “Videos” folder/directory and using your platform’s movie player.

We have now added MP3 sounds to the “Electric Emperor”. If you have QuickTime 4.0 or later (see URL above to get download a free copy), then you will be able to hear the MP3 files (music and Jack’s voice commentary) in the browser presentation. Otherwise, you will need to use one of the many stand alone MP3 players to hear the MP3 files (which are all conveniently located in the “MP3” folder on the CD-ROM).

Some of the materials in the “Extra Goodies” folder/directory require the use of the Adobe PDF reader [ON-LINE LINK]. There are versions of the Adobe PDF reader for Macintosh, Windows 3, 95, 98, NT, MS-DOS, OS/2, Digital UNIX, HP-UX, IRIX, Solaris, SunOS, AIX, and LINUX [ON-LINE LINK].

Avoid installing the Real Audio plug-in on your computer. It will maliciously break the ability of QuickTime to play MP3 audio files without providing an alternative capability.

In order to view view the entire browser presentation, in addition to the suggested software, you should have a Macintosh 68040 with FPU and Macintosh System 7.5.5 or later with at least 32 MB of RAM and at least 32 MB of hard disk space; a Macintosh PowerPC with Macintosh System 7.6.1 or later with at least 32 MB of RAM and at least 32 MB of hard disk space; or a Windows 95 or Windows 98 or Windows NT 4.0 or later system with a 120 MHz or faster Pentium, at least 32 MB of RAM and at least 32 MB of hard disk space and a 16 bit or better SoundBlaster compatible card, a 65,000 color video monitor card or better, DirectX 3.0 or later, DirectDraw, and DirectSound. In order to see the full colors of the presentation, you need a video monitor card that supports 24-bit or better (millions of colors) video. The presentation will still be viewable in as little as 256 colors. This presentation also requires a CD-ROM or DVD drive of at least 1x speed. The faster the CD-ROM or DVD drive, the better the presentation. Movies may be choppy on older CD-ROM drives.

The recommended computer for viewing this CD-ROM presentation is an Apple iMac with System 8.5 or later, Netscape Communicator 4.5 or later, ShockWave 7.0 or later, and QuickTime 3.0 or later. All of these items other than ShockWave 7.0 are pre-installed and ready to use on a new iMac.

In order to view the Macintosh custom reader, you need a 16 MHz black and white Mac Plus or later with at least 1/2 MB of RAM and at least 16K of free hard disk space and Macintosh System 4 or later. In order to see the presentation in color, you need a color video monitor card (or built-in color video), ColorQuickDraw, and at least 1 MB of RAM. In order to see the full color presentation, you need a 24 bit or better (millions of colors) video monitor card. In order to hear the sound, you need Macintosh System 6 or later.

Quick Instructions by Platform:

This disk should run on any computer that can read ISO 9660, the international standard format for CD-ROMs. Those with Macintoshes should see an enhanced version of the CD-ROM that includes standard Macintosh capabilities such as long file names, picture preview icons of picture files, double-clickable versions of sound files, aliases to key components, and a desk-top picture, as well as other capabilities only available on the Macintosh.

Windows/DOS notes: Contents of disk may or may not be accessible depending on your hardware and software configuration. Anything may work or anything may fail and we are unable to predict the results on any given Windows or DOS machine. As this is a grassroots effort, no technical support can be provided in this climate of chaos. We wish our Windows and DOS friends the best possible luck.

Brief List of Materials:

The following is a brief description of what is available and how to access it. What is available varies greatly by computer. All computers will have copies of the text and pictures from Jack Herer’s original book, plus additional pictures and text donated by various sources, voice commentary by Jack Herer, and the entire “Hemp for Victory” movie, although not all computers will have the necessary programs or utilities to make use of everything. A World Wide Web version of the Emperor is available and can be viewed and read by any web browser on any computer.

Quick Instructions by Use:

Information by Folder:

MUSIC (some computers): Two songs donated to the project, “The War on Us” by Elvy Musikka and “Hemp Hemp Hooray” by Michael M and Total Devastation.

TEXT FOLDER (all computers): The text from the main body portion of Jack’s original book, plus selected portions of the appendix. Whenever Jack gets around to providing me with readable copies of the appendix items, I will type them in. These files are all in Plain Text ASCII format, an international standard for Roman text readable by any computer made in the last 30 years. There is also a subfolder called “Bonus” that includes nearly 100 text files donated by Hemp BC, a Canadian activist organization. These files can be used with any text editor, word processor, or page layout program to create fliers, newsletters, and reports.

SOUNDS FOLDER (some computers): Copies of Jack Herer’s commentary on his book. These files are in Macintosh System 7 SND format and can be heard by double-clicking on them with System 7 or later or by using a sound playing utility under System 6 or on some DOS, Windows, and UNIX machines. These files can be used with many music, sound editing, and multi-media programs to augment sound and multi-media presentations.

PICTURES FOLDER (some computers): Copies of the original scans of the pictures from the main body section of Jack’s original book, augmented by copies of pictures, illustrations, and photographs used in the Custom Reader program. A subfolder of the Chapter 2 folder includes a set of hemp related icons that can be used. A subfolder labelled “Bonus” has additional pictures donated by Hempstead, Orange County Hemp Council, and others. These files are organized in subfolders by chapter and are in Motorola-ordered TIFF format, an international standard in the computer graphics industry. On Macintoshes, these files have small picture preview icons. The pictures from Jack’s book, the colorizations of pictures from Jack’s book, the chapter opening pictures, and the pictures by Michael M may be used with graphics, page layout, and multi-media programs to create fliers, newsletters, reports, and multi-media presentations.

VIDEOS FOLDER (some computers): In this folder you will find an aliasto the “Hemp for Victory” movie (the actual movie is in the top folder so that those who are stuck with Windows machines can easily find it).

HTML FOLDER (all computers): Complete copy of the main body text, some of the pictures, and additional donated materials. These HTML (and GIF and JPG) files can be viewed with any text-only or graphics-enhanced web browser. If you have Netscape Navigator on a Macintosh, double-click the alias labelled “HTML version of Emperor”. For all other computers or browsers, start your browser and then open the file named “INDEX.HTM”, located in the “HTML” folder. In addition to the text from the main body of Jack’s original book and some of the pictures from the Custom Reader, there are also subfolders containing HTML-based web sites donated by several activist and commercial groups. Because I have been cut back to only six hours a week of access to the computer graphics lab this semester, I was unable to finish the HTML portion of the disk. About half of the pages in the excellent web site donated by the Finnish Cannabis Association are broken and have incomplete links. The Emperor materials (but NOT the materials donated by others) can be used with any text editor, word processor, or web site preparation program to create personal pro-hemp web pages. We encourage pro-hemp activists to mix material from the CD-ROM (with appropriate credit) with their own materials to create interesting materials for the World Wide Web and elsewhere. We also encourage you to donate copies of your work for use in future editions of the Electric Emperor (see below for more information).

“HEMP FOR VICTORY” (Macintosh, Windows, Sun, SGI, AVID, Be, NeXT): This is a complete copy of the 1940s U.S. government black and white film “Hemp for Victory”. On a Macintosh, double-click the movie icon (the Apple program used to play the movie is available on the Macintosh disk). On other computers that have Apple’s QuickTime installed, use any movie playing utility or program that recognizes the industry standard QuickTime format.

CUSTOM READER (Macintosh): This is a limited multi-media presentation of Jack Herer’s original book. In addition to the text from the main body of Jack’s original book, there are also pictures from the book (many colorized), and many additional pictures, illustrations, and photographs donated by various individuals, non-profit organizations, and corporations. There are also additional written materials, including a copy of the Brawley Report (on the first legal industrial hemp field in the U.S. since WWII), how to start a college hemp club, how to open a hemp store, complete copies of the California Medical Marijuana Initiative and Jack’s Comprehensive Hemp and Marijuana Initiative, and out-dated information on Woody Harrelson’s arrest for growing hemp in Kentucky. This program includes services for the handicapped, including large format buttons for the motion impaired and speech synthesis for the blind and vision-impaired. Instructions on the use of the Custom Reader are in the first few pages of the Reader after the opening multi-media presentation. The custom Reader is limited to the Macintosh because I had to hand program a multi-media presentation program because nobody could come up with a copy of a commercial multi-media program for this disk.

EXTRA GOODIES (Macintosh): This folder contains additional materials, as described below:

TEX-EDIT PLUS 2.0.4 (Macintosh): This is a working text editor with numerous cool functions donated by Tom Bender [ON-LINE LINK]. This is shareware and those who use it should pay Tom his $10 shareware fee. Tex-Edit Plus has enough power that it can be used to create fliers, newsletters, and reports, including both text and pictures.

SHAREWARE (Macintosh): This includes a copy of the Kaya Indica story, the true story of one mother and her infant daughter’s harassment at the hands of the crazed Drug War fanatics.

CLIP ART (some computers): This folder contains various pieces of clip art donated by Michael M. These are in industry standard TIFF format.

STUFF (all computers): This folder contains both Adobe PDF files (readable by more than a dozen computer platforms) and TIFF files (a standard in the graphics industry).

DONATIONS FOR FUTURE EDITIONS

of the “ELECTRIC EMPEROR”:

The Emperor materials (but NOT the materials donated by others) can be used to create personal pro-hemp web pages, newsletters, fliers, and other materials. We encourage pro-hemp activists to mix material from the CD-ROM (with appropriate credit) with their own materials to create interesting materials for the World Wide Web and elsewhere. We also encourage you to donate copies of your work for use in future editions of the “Electric Emperor”. We also encourage the donation of artwork, photographs, and short articles.

You should own all copyrights to any materials you donate.

Text materials should be in either Plain Text ASCII or formatted HTML.

Graphic materials (pictures, photographs, drawings, illustrations) should be in GIF, JPEG, TIFF, EPS, PDF, or PICT formats and should be 240 pixels tall by 320 pixels wide or smaller. Graphics materials intended for use in print should be in EPS format and can be up to full page size.

Sound materials (music or voice) should be very short and in AIFF, System 7 SND, or QuickTime movie format. We are particularly interested in QuickTime movie MIDI files in a variety of styles for use as background music.

Multi-media materials (animations, videos, interactive pieces) should be very short and in QuickTime movie, ShockWave, Splash, or PDF formats.

Web materials should be completely self-contained, including the HTML code. After spending months and still not finishing the conversions, we will now only accept ISO 9660 Level One naming conventions for all files (eight character file names with three character extensions, where all characters are limited to capital letters, digits, and the underscore character).

Contact Milo or Stephen at Majik@Majik.org for details on the best way to deliver donated materials.

We also desperately need equipment to finish this disk. For the last two and half years Jack has been waiting for someone to loan computers to this project. We would really like to finish this disk before CD-ROMs are completely replaced by DVDs.
